1. Purpose
Drive 2 Survive Driving School is committed to the safety, wellbeing, and dignity of all children and young people. We have zero tolerance for child abuse, harm, or exploitation.
This policy establishes systems, behaviours, and accountability measures to ensure all students under 18 are protected while participating in driving lessons and related activities.
(used in conjuntion with Terms & Conditions)
2. Scope
This policy applies to:
- All instructors (including contractors)
- Administrative staff
- Volunteers (if applicable)
- Any third-party providers engaged by the business
3. Definition of a Child
A child is any person under the age of 18.
4. Statement of Commitment
We commit to:
- Acting in the best interests of the child at all times
- Creating a physically and psychologically safe learning environment
- Taking all concerns and allegations seriously
- Complying with Queensland legislation and mandatory reporting obligations
5. Code of Conduct (Child Safety)
All staff and instructors must:
Acceptable Behaviour
- Maintain professional boundaries at all times
- Communicate respectfully and age-appropriately
- Ensure lessons are conducted in a safe, observable manner
- Encourage student voice and participation
- Immediately report any safety concerns
6. Risk Management
1:1 Lessons (High Risk Environment)
Controls:
- Parents/guardians informed of lesson schedules
- GPS tracking or lesson logging recommended
- No deviation from planned lesson routes without justification
- Student pickup/drop-off protocols clearly in place
Vehicle-Based Environment
Controls:
- Dashcams used forward facing and rear facing - not audio
- Vehicles are fitted with dual controls with appropriate signage to reflect it's a driving school car & workplace
- Instructor vehicle is fully road legal and roadworthy
- Lessons conducted in a student's car must also be roadworthy and insured
- Instructor remains in control of lesson structure
Communication Risks
Controls:
- All communication through official phone/email only
- No social media contact with students on a peronal account
- Parent/guardian included for under-18 communication where possible
7. Training & Awareness
All staff must receive:
- Child Safe Standards induction
- Clear guidance on acceptable vs unacceptable conduct
- Mandatory reporting obligations
- Ongoing refresher training (recommended annually)
9. Reporting & Responding to Concerns
If a concern arises:
- Ensure immediate safety of the child
- Document facts (no assumptions)
- Report internally (business owner/manager)
- Escalate externally where required:
- Police (if immediate danger)
- Child Safety authorities (QLD)
10. Empowering Students & Families
We will:
- Clearly communicate expected behaviours to students
- Encourage students to speak up if uncomfortable
- Provide simple reporting pathways for concerns
- Respect cultural, linguistic, and individual needs
11. Privacy & Information Handling
- Student information is confidential and securely stored
- Only relevant personnel access student data
- No unauthorised sharing of personal information
12. Continuous Improvement
We will:
- Regularly review incidents, feedback, and risks
- Update this policy annually or when legislation changes
- Maintain a culture of safety, not just compliance

This policy is reviewed annually or as required by legislative changes.
